Thing #16

http://secondaryesldcs.pbwiki.com/

A quickie on Wiki- I created this Wiki with the intent to communicate and collaborate with SBISD’s ESL DCs (and teachers if interested). However, I have not had much luck! What’s getting in the way- fear factor, time, too complicated or other? One of my goals was to create valuable resources in a collaborative environment using this online database, but not there yet! …. Wanna a Wiki?

  1. I think that people check the wiki but, it doesn't change much and they don't really leave comments. Maybe you could attach a bean counter.
I wonder if people are afraid to leave comments because they have to sort of sign their name away to do it. First you have to be able to read the funny letters and then you have to leave your name everytime.
    signing out la

  2. I think about this often- We have offered our dept several hour of staff development in technology and it seems nobody is using much of it. Don't really know why- a little frustrating though!

  3. Thank you for posting a comment on my blog. After reading your email this morning I have been doing a lot of thinking. Our primary goal as ESL teachers is to get students speaking, reading, writing and listening ... and thinking in English. I beleive we need a tool that will allow them to do all of those things. I don't know if an Ipod would do it. I was thinking that it is possible that the notebooks might be better suited to our program. I think it would be cool to have them keep their "journals" for math and science in a blog form. I checked out a book that I want to read called Classroom Blogging - A teachers guide to blogs, wikis and other tools that are shaping a new information landscape by D. Warlick. I love that he has a way to monitor them. As quickly as my kids have picked up basic computing skills I think that we could use it somehow to get them communicating in English to the Flat world in 2.0 and to other people struggling to understand English. We are thinking about combining our grant with our Spanish teachers so some of the kids would be the same but, others would be English speakers so that would be really cool. My worry is that all of this is so new to me and I want to pick the very best tool for it. Also, I know that other teachers have already broken the wiki, blog playground so I can't figure out what our "new twist" would be??
Anyways, it is great having someone to brainstorm it with. We really gotta get the girls doing this so we can all kvetch about it.

  4. Here is idea I just had... what do you know about the Guthrie Center? In my opinion, that's one of SBISD's best kept secrets (not really a secret, but...)- I suggest we look into touching base with some of those teachers and use them as resources. If nothing else, just get on their webpage and check out how high tech it is. You can really get ideas of the tools (technology) being used there! Remember, they can't teach the traditional way- they are very hands-on... visit their webpage and consider going there... A pretty cool place!
